At last, antimalware software for your phone from a source you
know. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. — Book of Job, 22:25
One objection I have to installing antimalware software from the web is it is
difficult to know the source of the software. Most so-called "free
software" attempts to monetize use of the product one way or the other.
There are also security considerations to be weighed whenever
downloading, even from your cell manufacturer's "store." Although
Apple wields greater control over what products will be hosted on its
platform than does the Google/Android world, turkeys do slip in from
time to time.
I must add, like
Windows Defender for desktops, if MSDefender detects another antimalware
application present on the device, MSDefender will not start. If
you already have an antimalware application on your phone, and you want
to try MSDefender, I strongly suggest you uninstall that other app
before installing MSDefender. If you wish to go back after
installing MSDefender, then simply uninstall MSDefender and reinstall
the other app that you prefer.
Once you have been logged into your MS account, the MSDefender app will start the setup process for your phone. Agree to the Terms, then Click the Blue button that takes you through the setup step by step. You must complete each step of the process to complete the setup. Phishing via SMS or Smishing is becoming an enormous problem. I find it good to know much this crap will be filtered.
Next comes the "permissions" stage of the setup. These steps might seem overly intrusive. For the application to monitor your activity on the Internet and keep you safe from web based threats, then the app must be able to track where you go and intend to do while using your phone on the web. You can skip this step if you wish, but the full protection the app offers will not be available. Once permissions are all setup, the last step of the setup process is run a quick scan of your phone for any present threats. And you are now all setup with Microsoft Defender for your smartphone. The final screen that refers "devices aren't fully protected" only means I did not install this Defender on my notebook because Windows 11 has its own antimalware software. |
